Yio Chu Kang is not renowned for its abundance of restaurants, cafes or other lifestyle options. Indeed, upon leaving the MRT station – YCK, as it is affectionately known by locals, is on the North-South Line – it does not look like it has much to offer a hungry or thirsty traveller at all. Like with many things in life, however, anything that you have to make an effort to find ends up being more rewarding more often than not.

1. Bgain 630 Eating House

Cross over Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6, walk along the side of block 636, and there, opposite both the Chu Sheng and Swee Kow Kuan Temples, is a taste of what is to come. Bgain 630 Eating House is small, but has a nice range of stalls, including a popular Char Grill Bar, a rojak stall and economic rice stall Xiang Wei Qing.

Just a few metres further down Ang Mio Kio Street 61 towards block 639, there are more eateries, notably Yun Seafood Fish head Steamboat, Wan Yuan Vegetarian and Kungfu Roast, which offers whole succulent roast ducks for under $20.

If you head back up Ang Mio Kio Street 61, past Bgain 630 Eating House, you will reach what is probably the most celebrated of Yio Chu Kang’s culinary destinations – Ang Mo Kio 628 Market.

2. Ang Mo Kio 628 Market

With a reputation for tasty dishes, good-sized portions and low prices, the hawker centre in the market is popular with residents from all over Ang Mo Kio, not just YCK. Favourites include Foy Yin Vegetarian Food, which, despite simple ingredients, manages to create sumptuous flavours; Sumo Big Prawn, the stall with its very own TV show; Ho Bee Roast, which, many claim, offers the best roast duck in Singapore; and Konomi Zen at #01-59 with a growing reputation especially for both its salmon don and teriyaki chicken don. Within the same building is a large and popular wet market, as well as a fruit and vegetable market.

3. Sakura International Buffet

Another landmark in Yio Chu Kang that most people will know is the stadium and sports complex. There, you can find a running track, swimming complex and tennis courts, as well as an F&B outlet. Sakura International Buffet offers an Asian buffet, featuring Japanese, Korean and Indian cuisine.

The northern half of Yio Chu Kang is characterised by its landed housing estates. One of the downsides of such areas is their lack of dining options within easy walking distance or even a few minutes’ drive. However, that is no longer an issue for residents in and around Cactus Road, Cactus Drive and Cactus Crescent. The mixed development Flora Vista and Floraview has a row of F&B units, with another two set to open in the near future.

4. Nayana Kpop Café & Restaurant

The largest of those already open is Nayana. It is a K-pop themed café/restaurant designed as a place where fans of the music can meet up and discuss their idols. The good thing about Nayana, though, is that it doesn’t skimp on the quality of its food offerings. The food – Korean cuisine, as you would expect – is incredibly good and in only a short time this quirky cafe has established a winning reputation among music fans and gourmands alike.

5. Small Ville Bakery Café

On the same strip as Nayana, there are also Praise Kitchen, which is reputed to serve up the best Southern Indian dishes in the area; Yume Patisserie and Small Ville Bakery Café. Small Ville has a larger and more diverse menu than its moniker would suggest, and as well as a reputation for great friendly service, making it a local favourite for its breakfasts.

Finally, located next to the MRT station and sports complex is the Grassroots Club, where you can find three restaurants. The smallest is Ei8hth Avenue which offers artisanal ice creams, cakes and pastries. There is also Imperial Court Restaurant, while Muslim Delights is not just a restaurant specialising in Halal cuisine, but also a celebrated wedding venue that has hosted the nuptials of more than one famous couple and can accommodate up to 6,000 guests.
