As early as 8.30am on Jan 15, ardent fans of feng shui consultant Joey Yap gathered at Resorts World Convention Centre in Sentosa awaiting the start of his Feng Shui & Astrology 2017 seminar at 10am. Over 3,000 people attended the event, dubbed one of the largest and most anticipated annual events in Chinese metaphysics.
They were all eager to learn what the upcoming year of the Fire Rooster will bring and how it will affect them. According to Yap, the upcoming Year of the Fire Rooster will be dominated by challenges, fierce competition and scarcity of resources due to the imbalance of elements. The Year of the Fire Rooster begins on Feb 3.
Chinese astrology is divided into wuxing or the five elements — metal, wood, water, fire and earth — with each element having its own strengths and weaknesses.

Yap foresees new breakthroughs, collaborations in fire-element-related industries
The strongest element is metal, which is considered a prosperous element. Financial, automobile, military and manufacturing sectors will have positive changes amid strong competition. However, business owners will be subjected to abrupt and reactive regulatory pressures. Cash flow issues will arise as a result of limited resources, given the weakness of the earth element that produces metal, explains Yap.
The second dominant element is water, which is associated with innovation. Yap predicts water-related industries such as the aquatic and fisheries sector, shipping and tourism could see some growth and opportunities with increased innovation.
The weakest of the five elements is earth. Earth-related industries such as the property sector will continue to face challenges, warns Yap.
Turning to global events, Yap says the US will experience strong economic growth and robust earnings under “Trumpenomics” in the Year of the Fire Rooster. However, there will also be a lot of conflicts and opposition in the year ahead.
In the East, China is looking to cement its control and exert its position as a superpower. China will also expand its reach in the region, which will have an impact on Southeast Asia, adds Yap.
He forecasts a rocky relationship between the US and China. “While the US is likely to pursue protectionism, China will step in to fill the void in Southeast Asia,” says Yap.

Economic sentiment in Southeast Asia is likely to remain pessimistic, says Yap.
Yap expects services, transport and other domestic sectors in Singapore to perform well.
